1st Grade Wonders & Unite for Literacy

 This year I have been investigating the question, "Who am I as a reader?" with my students in grades 1-5.  In this 1st grade lesson we do a little wondering and investigating to dig deeper into our wonders.  I partnered a picture book and Unite for Literacy.

We began with this read aloud

What do you wonder about?
I asked students to write/draw about this question.

Student work: I wonder about my dog because I love my dog
Student wonders (animals were a common theme).

Student work: I wonder about the moon
We shared these with each other.

I can read or listen to books on Unite for Literacy
At the end of the class we shared what we listened to.


My takeaways

I can not speak highly enough about Unite for Literacy.
  • I love how easy it is to browse.  
  • I love how students can listen!
  • I love that you can read/listen in languages other than English.
A picture book and some book browsing feels so good to me!  I miss the physical browsing, but Unite for Literacy makes it feel *almost* like we are doing that.  Students were excited that they were successful and you could feel their excitement.

The crafter and engineer in me LOVES origami. That has rubbed off on my students. Students' love of origami grows and evolves in our library Why origami? It is active! Active nonfiction books guide students through DOING something. It has a different feel from most books that share facts.  It supports literacy - both spatial and the traditional literacy. Origami encourages reading through the visual appeal of the pages - no heavy text is required to read to be successful. Captions or short directions do the trick. Short spurts make students feel successful! Leadership! Student leaders will emerge from the group and become "coaches" for the others. My Reading Identity: Who am I as a reader?

This lesson was about making a visual representation of our reading selves.  We drew, we laughed, we learned about each other as readers, and started building a reading community.  We did this on a remote day.  *This was developed in conjunction with my brilliant colleagues.* Standards:  AASL: Inquire/Share I.C.1 . Interacting with content presented by others. I decided we needed a theme to tie a disjointed year together and settled on the question:  I spent much of my summer thinking about "identity" but needed a concrete landing place for those big, abstract thoughts.  I wondered what would happen if we thought about "identity" through a reading lens. Circulation Policies in our Library

Developing relationships with students and families is my priority. I want them to have what they need from our library, but I also want (and need) them to respect our library and other students and return books so others can borrow them. Lost books are a reality. We lose MANY of them (too many of them) because it isn't something I spend much time or energy dwelling on. My hope is that the "lost" book has found its way into a home and is being loved there. However, this is something that has been increasingly on my mind. This past summer I read Rebeka Barringer's Knowledge Quest article  “How Inclusive and Human-First Circulation Policies & Practices Can Impact a Child’s Relationship with Elementary Library Spaces” (Nov/Dec 2022) and it spoke to me.
